Thaumatrope

Thaumatropes are optical illusions and very easy to make.

A thaumatrope is a Victorian toy and comes from two Greek words meaning “wonder” and “turn”

A circle of card with a picture on each side is attached to two pieces of string. When the strings are twisted quickly the two pictures appear to combine into a single picture. You can’t see on the fairly rubbishy photo above, but the dog is dreaming of a bone!

You will need card, string and a template: blank here     thaumatrope blank, picture here thaumatrope pictures

Pick the design you want.

Cut out each circle and punch holes in the side

Tape a coin to the back of one disc as this seems to help it turn better

Then place the disc back to back with the picture facing opposite ways and thread the string through each side

Now twist the thread and watch the illusion!
