Giant bubbles

Summer fun with bubbles, the secret is glycerine

You will need a straw, some string, water, washing up liquid and glycerine

Cut the straw in half

Cut a piece of string as big as your outstretched arms

Thread the string through the straws and knot so you have a circle of string

The two straw pieces are your handles

Mix the water, glycerine and washing up liquid together

For 400ml of bubble solution you need, 380ml of water (95%), 12ml of washing up liquid (35) and 8ml of glycerine (2%)

Mix them together being carefully not to make the mixture foamy

Put your circle of string in the mix, collecting a film of the mixture

Carefully pull the straws apart and lift up to fill the film with air

Loosen the circle and close to release the bubble

Fish kite

An old one, but still fun

You will need tissue, glue, white card, sequins and glitter

Using the template here fish kite 1 and here f ish kite 2 cut out both halves of the fish shape and tape together

Trace the fish shape onto a sheet of folded tissue paper

Carefully glue both shapes together, leaving the mouth open

Cut a 2cm strip from the long side of a sheet of A4 card or stiff paper, this is the mouth liner

Roll up to make a ring

Glue the mouth liner inside the mouth

Decorate with sequins and glitter

Push a piece of wire through the mouth ring and fly!

Really easy to make, once you have the knack…

You need about 50cm of waxed cotton, or cord and a bead or charm

Cut about 50cm of the waxed cotton or silk thread and thread your charm to the middle

Bend the thread into a smallish circle and hold between your thumb and forefinger

Take the end of the thread facing away from your hand and wind three times round your finger, with the other end safely tucked inside

Then slide the loops off your finger, take the end of the thread and push back on itself through the tunnel of loops

Repeat on the other side
